Miss Belinda was beautiful and the belle of the season in London. She then was told that a match was made for her by her father before she had been born and finalized once she was. She had never met the Duke. He was a out 10 years older. She was to meet him at his sister's ball and his sister had sponsored her season. She was not happy about an arranged marriage made without any input from her and angry at not being told only a few days before the announcement was to be made.

The Duke was a very handsome man and had been much attention by the ladies in England and on the continent. Be was a military hero and heavily engaged in the diplomatic service. The King contacted him for a meeting the evening of the ball. During that meeting they discussed his coming engagement announcement dinner to be held the next night and to which the king was coming.

While Lady Belinda went to the ball, the Duke was not there. She got upset about things some gossips said and a bit after dinner she left claiming a migraine. The Duke arrived after she left. The Duke' s arrival sparked up the party and it lasted quite late. The next day two gossipy girls came to tell how lively it was after she left. They told her that they told. The Duke about a comment she made about the Duke being old May have had go go home go sleep as her grandfather often did. The Duke , the girls relayed to Belinda, had said that Belinda meant snake in one country. Belinda was furious by the time they left.

Belinda' s grandmother s father told her he would likely come by to see her the next day to apologize or would send her flowers. The Duke' s sister told him Belinda was beautiful, kind and a charmer and he should go calling on her. She told him he should send flowers. He refused as be was as arrogant as she was a.d thought she should be grateful he was going to marry her.

Just before the dinner Belinda disappeared leaving a note. She went to their castle in the country. She was welcomed by all the staff as she was loved by the staff who had watched her grow up. The Duke planned to go back to his castle and thought there might be another side and decided to follow as he figured she had no place to go but her other home. He met up with some gypsies and rode with them although he had some trouble with the clan head as his girl was a cliff and wanted to make him jealous and cause trouble. He did not use his own name but made up one. He was planning to make Belinda' s acquaintance.

There were some intrigues that arose from the gypsies. How would they find one another? Could the situation be made to work out? He had told the king she had the mumps but she had been removed so as to not infect the king. It could have been a political disaster. The gypsies were not very trusting. They were both going to fide Ingo Dave her. This was very intriguing. I enjoyed the book. I think you will too.

The Random Gentleman edition by Elizabeth Chater Romance eBooks Reviews

Here we have gypsies, diplomats, a craggy old easel, a spoiled granddaughter and a marriage contract signed at birth. Out of this broth comes a charming story, with twists and unexpected turns. A good read.
I either did a understand or was confused reading the very end. I am going to say that it was confusing and happened so quickly ... The very star, was made to be stupid. Change the ending please!
I thought this was a good read. The writing was clear and easy to follow with its flow. However, the bumbling woman who jumped to conclusions was just too much a stereotype of the ditzy female. The sister of the Duke saying that he could have a good duchess in a few years with training of the Earl's daughter was too much for me. I would expect that a female member of the gentry would have been trained to be a duchess to a) shoot for the highest and b) for arranged marriages.
The first words out of my mouth after finishing this book (truthfully, after realizing the book had ended only when 'About The Author' showed up, instead of the next chapter) were "That was so dumb." And really...that about sums it up.

If you don't mind reading a silly, very unromantic, uninteresting book full of overly complex, grandiose words gleaned from a thesaurus - then try this one out. Just remember, you have been forewarned.
This book is a true regency in that it is a clean, sweet romance. The writing was very good--lots of long complex sentences with very little typos or other errors. My problem with the book is that I wish the storyline had been a little more complex with some plot twists or better developed secondary characters. The book was technically very well done, I just wish it was fleshed out a little more. I had a hard time getting lost in the story and I think it was because of this, however I think it would have been hard to add extra because of the style and the main plot. It is a fun, light read, I just wish there had been more to it.
I liked this story. I don't buy books for sex. I buy because something about story interests me. This was typical historical and it wasn't bad. If you're looking for a seven page kiss, this is NOT for you. IF you want to read something nice and sweet, that doesn't leave bad taste in your mouth, go for it. It's typical for time period. Nicely done.
I really enjoy the writing style of Elizabeth Chater. I find it reminds me of the style of Georgette Heyer , with the interesting expressions from the period. It also would be considered G-rated, since there are no sex scenes. I found the story an enjoyable read except I couldn't bring myself to be in sympathy with the main characters. I found they were prideful and immature and that hindered my ability to like them and thus really enjoy the story. As I said, the writing style though is very enjoyable and there is a storyline, so I was conflicted on how many stars to give it. It is too good for just 3 but 4 may be just a little bit too much because of all the other truly superb books out there. I would like to point out that quite enjoyed the other book by the author that I have read - the Marriage Mart - and I will definitely buy other books by her. For this one, I suggest reading the free sample of the book first ; the characters may not bother you that same as they did me.
