In these times of pestilences, wars, rumors of wars, over-the-top entertainment, and other such calamities it's rare for me to read a book that leaves me feeling lighter and more refreshed, but WOLVES, BOYS, & OTHER THINGS THAT MIGHT KILL ME by Kristen Chandler was such a book.

16 year-old KJ Carson works with her father as a hunting and fishing guide in Yellowstone National Park. After witnessing one wolf viciously kill another, her father tells her, "The minute that wolf backed down it was all over." At school, KJ is partnered with the new kid in town, Virgil, to create a column for the school newspaper about the recently reintroduced wolf packs around the park. KJ writes, Virgil takes the pictures, and the sparks fly--between them and between the environmentalists and ranchers who inhabit their small community. It's not long before things escalate out of control. As KJ studies the fearless wolf packs, she learns one of the most important lessons of all: when to back down and when to take a stand.

WOLVES, BOYS, & OTHER THINGS THAT MIGHT KILL ME is a sensitive, delightful, thought-provoking coming-of-age tale. Chandler uses a mix of story, book quotes, lists, jokes, recipes, newspaper clippings and (my favorite!) KJ's poetry to create a story that is tense and suspenseful but at times hilarious and lighthearted.

KJ is a teen protagonist with an authentic, unique, charming voice and an endearing mix of toughness and vulnerability. Her problems are complex from a strained relationship with her father, dealing with a first love, and ending up in the middle of a political firestorm. I loved taking the awkward, amusing, terrifying journey with her as she finds the answers to her problems for herself.

HOW DOES THAT KRISTEN CHANDLER DO IT? I'm really hoping she dishes her writing secrets at the writing conference I'm going to this year: Writing and Illustrating for Young Readers in Utah, June 2013. I'm thrilled to be working as her assistant in the morning workshop classes. Think excellent writing is contagious? I hope so.

Wolves Boys and Other Things That Might Kill Me Kristen Chandler 9780670011421 Books Reviews

This is a nicely written book that's an easy read. It'll never make the best-seller list but I enjoyed it anyways.
Excellent Novel for young adults...
A really great read. Full of interesting and funny situations. I enjoyed the characters, the sweet romance, and the fascinating perspective on Yellowstone and conservation.
What could have been a dull subject (the reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone National Park) is transformed by Kristen into a story that skillfully blends fact with excitement, intrigue, and, oh yes, teenage love. Well done.
The overall plot was good but the story dragged in some places. The ending was also a little open ended for my taste. I didn't mind this read but will not be picking it up again.
i liked that it had some history with the returning of the wolves. I really thought KJ died and that was the best solution to their problem. But I was so glad when she didn't die. Kris left the story hanging a little, just as she should have. perfect ending. loved this book. its an easy read.
Found it by accident & got it to read on vacation and read it in 4 days... LUV IT.
I <3 real wolves (ones that don't morph into people) and at the same time know the have their downside & I think Mrs. Chandler does too!
She presents "both sides of the story" and navigates a highly controversial topic {knew it was controversial, had no clue it ran that deep} while keeping it interesting. I actually feel bad for the ranchers now... Anyway KJ rocks and it's not just because I see a little of myself in her. She's a courageous character and has a lot of guts. Had me gripped until the end. Very good for a first novel.
I'm not giving any spoilers away( don't be lazy, read the book) but I will say this when it all boils down you can stand up and have a chance or back down and be shredded. It is your choice.
Now in the top 4 of my fave wolf books
1Child of the wolves
2The dog with the golden eyes
3 Julie of the wolves
4Wolves, boys and other things that might kill me
